In the Ming Dynasty there were more than one thousand households in the city . The city's hereditary chief Mu and his family dwelled in an elegant and magnificent mansion . The high terrains of the Lion Mountain to its west and he elephant Mountain and the Gold Rainbow Mountain to its north hinder the cold winds from the west and the north . The Jade Spring divides into three springs at he city wall , which flow past all the households . There are "flowing stream and drooping willows at every household." For hundreds of years th e inhabitants have followed a convention :Drink in the first spring . Wash vegetables in the second spring . Wash clothes in the third spring . To its southeast lie fertile fields extending scores of li's , giving the warm east wind a free access to it .
Lijiang's mural paintings were drawn by painters of the Han , Tibetan and Naxi nationalities invited y the chief Mu .
