Mount Wudang , also named Mount Supreme-Harmony , is located in Danjiankou city in the northwest of Hubei province . With Shennongjia Forest at the back and Danjiangkou Reservoir in the front , it is a famous Daoist Mountain in China and the renowned source of Wudang Boxing Art . It has a perimeter of 4,000 kilometers and is scattered with scenic spots including 72 peaks , 36 cliffs , 24 brooks , 9 springs , 8 Daoist palaces and 2 Daoist temples . The main peak is Heaven Pillar Peak 1,612-meters above the sea-level , lauded as "One Pillar Holding Up the Sky" . The scenery of it embraces the magnificence , perils , strangeness , seclusion and elegance of the "five great mountains" of China . There are several thousand historical relics from the Yuan and Ming Dynasties and number of imposing building complexes . The overall layout of the ancient building features combination of separation and grouping , symmetry , and appropriate interspaces . Of these ancient buildings , Golden Hall and Violet Cloud Palace are both protected key national cultural relic units
Lying at the foot of the Flag-Waving Peak northeast of the Heaven-Pillar Peak , Violet Cloud Palace was constructed in the 11th . year of the reign of Yongle (1413) in the Ming Dynasty and is fairly well preserved . Built on a three-layer terrace , it is five-partitions wide with a green glaze-tile roof , a red-painted wall , multiple eaves , nine roof ridges , decorative arches, corbels , sunk panels , flower and bird patterns , colored paintings and eight trigram pictures . The entire green and golden building has a majestic splendor . The Golden Palace , known popularly as the Golden Top , situated on top of Heaven-Pillar Peak , was erected in the 14th year of the reign of Yongle (1416) in the Ming Dynasty . The building is 5.54 meters high , 5.8-meters wide and 4.2-meters deep , constructed with imitated wood . It displays the high casting , assembling and gilding skills of the ancient Chinese craftsmen . It is one of the most outstanding representative Daoist architectures on Mount Wudang .
