Mount Tai Natural Resort

Mount Tai Natural Resort was listed in 1987 by UNESCOWHC as a Dual Cultural –Natural World Heritage .

 Situated in the center of Shandong province , Mount Tai , historically named Mount Dai or Mount Daizong , extends among Jinan , Tai'an , Licheng and Changqing . It occupies an area of 426 square kilometers and has a perimeter of 80-kilometers . Its main peak , Jade-Emperor Peak , lies in the north of Taishan city at 1,545 meters above the sea level . Mount Tai is majestic and elegant , with 72 magnificent peaks , imposing flying falls and springs , old pines and elms , fantastic rocks and gullies . The Resort is divided into five tourist sites . There are two mountain-ascending routes , the east and the west routes , that converge at the Central Heavenly Gateway and lead to the summit , with a total distance of nine kilometers and with flights totaling 6,293 steps (claimed to be 7,000 steps) . Among its scenic spots are Dragon-Pond Reservoir , Central Heavenly Gateway , Five Officials Pines , the Paired Pines Hill , the Eighteen Bends , Southern Heavenly Gateway , Green Observing Peak , etc . Visitors arriving at the summit of Mount Tai can appreciate the four wonderful sights of Sunrise at East , Golden Belt of the Yellow River , Sun Glow at Evening and Jade Cloud Tray .

  "The most perilous spot on Mount Tai is the eighteen Bends ." The segment of the trail between the foot of the Paired Pines Hill and he southern Heavenly Gateway near the summit is called the Sky Scaling Ladder , known popularly as the Eighteen Bends . It has a distance of over one km . and a perpendicular height of 400 m ., with 1,594 steps . All its steps are made with slabs of gneiss of Mount Tai . A cable car can be used now to ascend the summit from the Central Heavenly Gateway .

 Mount Tai stands out not only as one of the Chinese mountain parks , but also as a natural historic and art museum . Just along the sightseeing route can be found more than 1,800 stone carvings .The most famous of the stone carvings are : the precious Qin stone carving ; the forerunner of the big regular script Diamond Sutra at Jinshi Gully , the perpetual riddle No-Character Tablet , and the gold-tinged Inscription of Memorial of Mount Tai carved on a cliff in the Tang dynasty , etc . The Heaven-Blessing Hall in the Dai Temple on Mount Tai is ranked with the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing and the Dacheng Hall in Qufu as the three great Palatial Halls of China . It contains a large famous , fresco of "Mount Tai Deity , supposed to be painted in the Song Dynasty o describe he feudal emperor hunting and praying before the Deity , which is both refined and grandiose , with inscriptions in elegant calligraphy . Also , there are forty statues of Arhats in the Thousand-Buddha Hall in Ling Yan Temple , vividly sculpted in the Song Dynasty . All these show the outstanding art and skills of engraving , calligraphy and sculpture of he ancient Chinese .
