Peking Man
The discovery of the Peking Man fossil at Zhoukoudian is undoubtedly a tremendous contribution to researches on the evolution of the mankind . The site was put on the List of World Cultural Heritages in 1987 .
The Site is located at the foot of West Hill at Zhoukoudian village in Fangshan District of Beijing . In the 1920s Chinese archaeologists undertook excavation here and unearthed a complete skull of an ape man who lived more than 600 thousand years ago . The ape man was named Peking Man . Later on , in this fossil hill were discovered successively some primitive stone tools and fire-using remains . Archaeological researches affirm that Peking man was homo erectus living about 690,000 years ago in the Paleolithic Age . The Peking man lived in caves mainly on hunting . He could make and use coarse stone tool , and the learned to warm himself near natural fires and to eat cooked food .
In the Peking Man remains at Zhoukoudian were also discovered a stone awl , that was a production tool , and also bone tools made and used by him . In the site museum are displayed authentic animal fossils and ashes , rarely found in the world .
